Maria Filipakis helps companies and boards across the financial services sector develop regulatory frameworks and strategies on an array of regulatory, compliance, enforcement and supervisory issues. Among other matters, her areas of focus are cybersecurity and cyber-risk and emerging financial technologies.
Ms. Filipakis has held several leadership positions in both the private and public sector. Most recently, she was Managing Director at Global Atlantic Financial Company heading the company’s regulatory affairs and strategies team. Prior to joining Global Atlantic, Ms. Filipakis was the Executive Deputy Superintendent of the Capital Markets Division at the New York State Department of Financial Services. In that role, she led the Department’s agency-wide cybersecurity, fintech and virtual currency initiatives and represented the department on Governor Andrew Cuomo’s Cyber Security Advisory Board, the Conference of State Bank Supervisors Emerging Payments Task Force and the National Association of Insurance Commissioners Cybersecurity Task Force.
She has spoken extensively on the topic of emerging risks and technologies, including at the White House Council on Women and Girls highlighting the work of women in finance and technology. As head of the Capital Markets Division, Ms. Filipakis managed a staff of lawyers, risk and investment specialists, analysts and examiners providing advice and expertise in capital markets, enterprise risk management, financial analysis, anti-money laundering controls, and cybersecurity for over 3,000 financial institutions. She also led several of the department’s investigations and enforcement actions, including the investigation into global FX rate manipulation. Before joining the department, Ms. Filipakis held senior positions at the New York State Insurance Department and the New York Attorney General’s Office, including running the Investor Protection Bureau.
